I need help .. with a thesis topic?
I am working on a thesis paper for my World Cultures (history) class. I know that the one issue is sure to ill use baroque art style, the design is an artistic style characterized by large, elaborate, and .. what would be a modern art style how? I plan on comparing the two (as soon as I the second idea) in the open for all other ideas
Instead of comparing two art forms that are similar , why do not you contrast and Baroque Dadaism? Dadaism is incredibly simple, very different from Baroque. It is also very modern. Talk about the differences between the both styles and how they developed would you work a lot of material. Good luck!

Baroque Fictions $36 This volume is the first in-depth study of the French novelist Marguerite Yourcenar’s fiction to contend that the author’s texts exhibit in unexpected ways numerous characteristics of the neobaroque. This subversive, postmodern aesthetic privileges extravagant artistic play, flux, and heterogeneity. In demonstrating the affinity of Yourcenar’s texts with the neobaroque, the author of this study casts doubt on their presumed transparency and stability, qualities associated with the French neoclassical tradition of the past century, where the Yourcenarian œuvre is most often placed. Yourcenar’s election to the prestigious, tradition-bound French Academy in 1981 as its first female “immortal” cemented her already well-established niche in the twentieth-century French literary pantheon. A self-taught classicist, historian, and modern-day French moralist, Yourcenar has been praised for her polished, “classical” style and analyzed for her use of myth and universal themes. While those factors at first seem to justify amply the neoclassical label by which Yourcenar is most widely recognized, this study’s close reading of four of her fictions reveals instead the texts’ opacity and subversive resistance to closure, their rejection of stable interpretations, and their deconstruction of postmodern Grand Narratives. Theirs is a neobaroque “logic,” which stresses the absence of theoretical assurances and the limitations of reason. The coincidence of the new millennium — which in so many ways reflects Yourcenar’s disquieting vision — and her centenary in 2003 affords not so much an excuse to reject the author’s neoclassical label, but rather the obligation to reassess it in light of contemporary discourses. This study will be of interest to students of twentieth-century French fiction and comparative literature, especially that of the latter half of the twentieth century. |

The Baroque Lute $12.78 Andrew Maginley is an American lutenist, one of several who moved to Germany in order to pursue their art. Here he offers a program of three eighteenth century pieces that have plenty to say to one another. Opening the disc is Maginley’s own lute transcription of Bach’s Suite No. 1 for solo cello, which he claims is both historically and artistically justifiable and even desirable. That may or may not be so — the lute fills in some of the spaces whose emptiness makes Bach’s solo pieces so fascinating. But it is certainly interesting to hear Bach’s music juxtaposed with that of Sylvius Leopold Weiss, the greatest German lute virtuoso of the era. The two composers apparently knew and admired each other, and although Maginley’s booklet draws a stylistic contrast between the two, Weiss’ music has much in common with Bach’s. Both infuse the dances of the French suite with complex harmonies and contrapuntal procedures, and putting music by the two composers together exposes the listener to one of the very few figures who actually followed Bach along some of his lonely musical roads. Maginley’s style is unusual and attractive. Where other lutenists strive for a melancholy restraint that makes Bach sound like Dowland, or turn the lute into a big, booming thing, Maginley’s playing is meditative — thoughtful without being intellectual. Especially in the Weiss Sonata No. 36 in D minor he allows slight freedom to creep into his tempi, with an ingratiating effect. The final work by the little-known Adam Falckenhagen, a flashy, Vivaldian piece, offers an upbeat conclusion and allows Maginley to show his chops. This album is very nicely recorded. It runs counter to the current trend of miking the lute so close up that every arm motion of the performer sounds like a breeze blowing in the window, and its more distant, sounds-echoing-down-castle-halls sound environment fits perfectly with Maginley’s artistic aims. A nice counterpart and contrast to Yasunori Imamura’s grand recordings of Weiss, which are very different and more aggressive in their overall effect. ~ James Manheim, Rovi Performers: Andrew Maginley – Lute |
