By running simple vandalism and maturation into a fully fledged Form of art, street art is aware of itself and its power to communicate with people. For this reason, street art, perhaps more than any other art form, with strong social and political messages. This is incredibly clear on the streets of Cape Town, with distinctive pieces that are not only beautiful but also sensitive and loaded with meaning abundance. From political icons such as Nelson Mandela and Steve Biko, heroes of the struggle against apartheid, the works that highlight issues of social injustice as the abuse of women and the gap between rich and poor – very real problems that South Africa is struggling to come away with – Cape Town street art is a voice that no Voice and a forum for authentic expression in the urban wilderness.
Street performers are a special breed.
